Genting TrailBlazer, 2009

Genting TrailBlazer is a combination of adventure race and trail running that aims to promote the awareness of rainforest conservation and team spirit.

This year, there were around 500 teams or over thousand of participants participating in the race – an event record-breaking record. In the briefing session, apart of the heavy shower that rained for the past one week, most participants were unprepared for the upcoming things that might meet us during the race -> leeches!!

The route basically covered 14km from the beginning of downhill and transverse up at the end of the route – 700m apart from the bottom to the top. Although the distance itself was 14km, by no means we could judge the completion time by our normal running speed at the road. The whole journey covered different terrains: rugged jungle paths, asphalt stretches, river crossing and muddy trails where participants often had to balancing themselves and avoid slipping down. Moreover, at most of the uphill route, we were often met with traffic jam and moving ourselves slowly clamping tight on the ropes to avoid falling. The last challenges came where we all had to overcome numerous man-made obstacles: jumping down from a steep wooden slope, swamping through muddy water filling pits, climbing over the wall, and doing a leopard crawl to the finishing line.

In the end, we (me and Joen Lee) took more than 4hrs to complete the entire course using an hour to clear the man-made obstacles.

Incidentally, the race day was also Sok Hwa’s birthday. Happy Birthday, Sok Hwa!! :)
